MeNZB™ Independent Monitoring Board Endorses Vaccine safety (MOH) - 22 December 2004
Independent experts have reinforced their endorsement of the safety of the vaccine used in the Meningococcal B Immunisation Programme.

The epidemic is spreading to the North Island with record cases reported in November 2004. Infants are the most severely affected.

A press release issued December 3 (2003) by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment indicates the state is experiencing its worst influenza season in several years and confirms the death of five Colorado children.
Meningococcal B invasive disease and the new MeNZB™ vaccine - 16 November 2004
New Zealand is facing an epidemic of our own home grown strain of Meningitis disease. A new vaccine is being developed to combat this disease and the first round of clinical trials has started. The Late Infant Study is due to finish mid November and the Early Infant Study will be starting in mid January 2004.
Influenza takes hold in the UK - 1 November 2004
Recent reports from Scotland, England and Ireland indicate a virulent strain of influenza is circulating. Five deaths in children in September and October have now been attributed to the influenza A Fujian-like strain.
MMR Vaccine: Wakefield's Co-authors Publish Retraction Statement - 26 October 2004
Dr Andrew Wakefield is the lead author of the paper that suggested there may be a relation between the MMR vaccine and autism. However, ten of his co-authors have now published a formal retraction of the suggestion of a link in the medical journal, the Lancet. They have strongly disassociated themselves from the idea that the vaccine is somehow related to autism.
Bird Flu (Avian Flu) - 26 October 2004
A number of countries in Asia are experiencing outbreaks of Bird Flu. The potential for this widespread bird flu to change to a form which could infect people is concerning. So far there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission but world health officials are closely monitoring the situation. No vaccine is available for the bird flu strain of nfluenza. Next year's influenza vaccine chosen (MOH) - 13 October 2004
Planning has started for next year's influenza immunisation campaign. At a recent WHO conference in Canberra, Australia, health officials met to decide what strains of influenza should be in the 2005 southern hemisphere vaccine.
Rubella outbreak in the Pacific Islands - 7 October 2004
Rubella in the Pacific... Samoa and the Tokelau Islands are currently dealing with large rubella outbreaks.
Whooping Cough Epidemic Underway (MOH) - 1 September 2004
The Ministry of Health has just released figures that show New Zealand is now at the sharp end of another whooping cough (or pertussis) epidemic. So far this year over 1,500 people have been reported with the disease and by July 2004, nearly 100 had been hospitalised. One infant has died from whooping cough so far this year.
