Piercing Memories

Remembering the past to protect the future

The aim of the Piercing Memories project is to record personal accounts and experiences of diseases that are now vaccine preventable in New Zealand.

Nearly 200 stories from all around New Zealand have been recorded and are being used to demonstrate to parents and health professionals the reality of diseases that can now be prevented by immunisation.

The following stories have been edited from a recorded stories for the Piercing Memories project and are posted on this website with the consent of the author.

To date only the accounts supplied in text format can be viewed on this website. Audio and video tapes can be obtained through our Resource Catalogue.

Submit your own personal story of vaccine preventable disease in New Zealand or the Pacific Islands

We welcome any memories, recent or from long ago: family stories, medical nursing and school memories, recollections of early epidemics.

These stories would not have the protection of privacy offered by the Piercing Memories project and we suggest you do not include any identifying details of your family, yourself or others. We reserve the right to select and edit accounts.

If you would like to write about a personal experience or memory for our web site, please contact Erin Hanlon-Wake.
